PRODUCER, MIXING/MASTERING ENGINEER

Mixing/mastering engineer and music producer Bob Cooper (Nai Harvest, Nervus, Cultdreams, itoldyouiwouldeatyou) shows us around The Chairworks, and explains how NUGEN Audio's SEQ-S fits into his workflow.

A favourite for the mix bus

Bob Cooper is swiftly becoming one of the UK's most in-demand producers for punk and alternative rock music, having worked on projects for labels like Big Scary Monsters, Deathwish Inc. and even Sony.

Bob has recently moved into The Chairworks, an SSL-equipped residential studio in Castleford, and he took some time out of his day to show us around and chat about his typical mix workflow, including NUGEN Audio's SEQ-S - "one of my favourite plug-ins for the mix bus".

Avoiding phase issues

Most EQ plug-ins use minimum phase, which can cause phase coherence and mono compatibility issues in some circumstances. SEQ-S is a linear phase EQ, which uses subtle time shifting to keep your audio in phase.

"Because it's linear phase, [SEQ-S] really, really doesn't mess up the stuff that I've tried to create already in my mix. I can push quite a lot with it and it still feels super transparent. It doesn't feel like it's been EQ'd, it just feels like the thing that I needed to happen has happened."

"[NUGEN plug-ins are] super clean and super in depth, and I really, really like that about the company."
